Owasanoye: ICPC Recovers N117 Billion In Eight Months.

According to Professor Bolaji Owasanoye, SAN, the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, the Commission has recovered nearly N117 billion between January and August 2022.

In Abuja, during the Commission’s defense of the 2023 Budget Proposal, Professor Owasanoye made the disclosure in front of the House of Representatives committees on anti-corruption and appropriations.

 

The Chairman provided a breakdown of the recoveries during his discussion of the 2022 budget performance, mentioning N1.413 billion, $225,965 in the ICPC/TSA recovery account, and N1.264 billion in cash from tax intervention.
Plots of land, finished structures, automobiles, electronics, and jewelry valued at N679.13m, N2.603bn, N81.1m, N1.55m, and N195,500, respectively, are among the other recoveries.
The ICPC boss added that the Commission restrained N49.9bn through System Study and Review intervention; N6.435bn cash through budget tracking; N53.91bn through ICPC advisory and N614.2m in other accounts.
In addition to the recoveries, the Chairman also emphasized the Commission’s other achievements during the 2022 budget cycle, such as the conclusion of 672 investigations as well as 565 non-petition-led investigations, the achievement of 15 convictions, the tracking of 538 projects under the Constituency and Executive Projects Tracking Initiative, and the implementation of the Ethics and Integrity Compliance Scorecard on 260 MDAs.
The establishment of 26 Anti-Corruption and Transparency Units, the review of the Open Treasury Portal in 30 MDAs, the system study and review of 10 MDAs, the undertaking of 14 Corruption Monitoring activities, and the public awareness and education of Nigerians on and against corruption through various platforms are all examples of recent accomplishments.

A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has sentenced Sunmonu Olasunkanmi Thaoban to four years in prison for laundering ₦16 million by disguising its illegal origins and converting it into a 2018 black G-Wagon Jeep.

Key Details of the Case

  • Guilty Plea & Sentencing: Justice Akintayo Aluko handed down the sentence on Thursday after Thaoban pleaded guilty to a two-count EFCC charge, alongside an alternative fine option of ₦1.8 million.

  • The Offense: Prosecutors stated that Thaoban acted as a middleman in 2023, funneling illicit funds to purchase the luxury vehicle, violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

  • Asset Forfeiture: In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered the permanent forfeiture of both the convict’s G-Wagon and mobile phone to the Federal Government.

Related BDC Convictions

In a separate proceeding, Justice Aluko also convicted four Bureau de Change (BDC) operators—Umar Muhammad Lamido, Yusuf Musa Yusuf, Abdulmuhimin Mahmud, and Muhammed Musa—for conducting unauthorized foreign exchange transactions outside the official market. Following their guilty pleas, each received a 12-month prison sentence with an option of a ₦100,000 fine.
