The tension arose after the NDC distanced itself from a 59-member presidential campaign council recently constituted by the OK Movement to mobilize support for its presidential and vice-presidential candidates, Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso. In a statement, Cleopas declared that the list did not originate from the party, emphasizing that only the NDC leadership holds the authority to form such a council.

In response, the National Secretary of the OK Movement, Saadatu Sani, issued a statement in Abuja asserting the group’s autonomy as an independent political organization with its own structure and over 2.5 million registered members. Sani criticized the chairman’s remarks as unfortunate and demanded an apology directed at the movement and its Director General, Hon. John Ughulu.

While reaffirming its commitment to campaigning for Obi, Kwankwaso, and chosen NDC candidates nationwide, the movement maintained that it operates independently and does not require validation or approval from any individual to carry out its functions.

The allegations, initially raised by state social critic Chika Nwoba, suggested the funds were distributed as service fees. Speaking at the Ebonyi NUJ Press Week, Onwe dismissed the report as entirely false, clarifying that he holds no appointment with the state government.

“I am not employed by the Ebonyi State government. I have not been given or offered ₦25 million or any such amount at all. I do what I do on a personal impulse,” Onwe stated.

While maintaining his independence, Onwe commended the administration’s notable strides in the educational sector—specifically praising overseas scholarships for Master’s and PhD students. However, he also offered constructive criticism, arguing that the state’s current priorities should focus on health and education rather than commercial airline operations.

This decision, announced in a statement on Sunday by the Vice President’s spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, resolves weeks of uncertainty regarding President Tinubu’s attendance. Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Jimoh Ibrahim, had previously indicated that arrangements were being made for the President to attend, including a planned seating arrangement near U.S. President Donald Trump.

The high-level delegation to be led by Vice President Shettima will include Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, various ministers, and other senior government officials.

Agenda in New York

The 81st UNGA General Debate is scheduled to take place from September 22 to September 28, 2026, under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”

According to the Presidency’s statement, Vice President Shettima will represent President Tinubu at the summit. His engagements will include:

• Delivering Nigeria’s National Statement: Outlining the country’s position on major global issues affecting development, peace, security, and international cooperation.

• High-Level Meetings: Participating in discussions on critical topics such as the Right to Development and climate action.

• Bilateral Engagements: Joining the traditional reception for Heads of Delegation and holding a series of meetings with world leaders, heads of international organizations, and development partners.

Through these engagements, the delegation aims to advance President Tinubu’s economic diplomacy, deepen strategic partnerships, and strengthen Nigeria’s advocacy for reform of the global financial architecture, sustainable development, and multilateral cooperation.

This marks the third consecutive UNGA session President Tinubu has missed since assuming office. Vice President Shettima is expected to return to Nigeria at the conclusion of his engagements in New York.
