State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the commencement of the investigation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Onitsha. Ikenga stated that the incident has been escalated to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for further information but has yet to confirm the details.
The Second Niger Bridge has been under continuous 24-hour patrol since August 4, 2023, by a Joint Task Force from the Anambra and Delta State Police Commands to ensure the safety of road users. However, Ikenga could not confirm whether the viral video showing alleged vandalism was recent.
NAN reported that a viral video featured an unidentified man describing how rail fittings on the bridge were allegedly removed by suspected scavengers. In response to the video, Uche Orji, Chief Press Secretary to the Minister of Works, David Umahi, stated that security measures have been taken but did not disclose further details.
Anambra Commissioner for Information, Paul Nwosu, acknowledged that the Highway Department of the Federal Ministry of Works had been informed about the alleged vandalism. Nwosu emphasized that the state government is concerned about the theft of critical infrastructure components and noted that the police are aware of the ongoing theft issues.
“Police are aware of the theft; before now, there has been an indication of nefarious individuals attempting to steal these components,” Nwosu said. He highlighted the challenges faced by the police in monitoring the bridge, as criminals often hide and wait for security patrols to pass before striking.
Nwosu also noted the distinction between regular scrap iron and the essential components stolen from the bridge, which are necessary for the proper functioning and safety of the newly constructed road. He assured that the police and other security agencies are vigilant but acknowledged the difficulties in preventing all criminal activities.
To address the issue, the commissioner announced that a unit of mobile police would be stationed on the bridge to prevent future incidents of vandalism.
