This appeal follows Atiku’s recent statement advocating for a political resolution to Kanu’s prolonged detention. Atiku made this recommendation while condemning the killing of soldiers in Aba, Abia State, during a sit-at-home order by IPOB to commemorate May 30 Biafra Day. The incident occurred at the Obikabia Junction Checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Area, near Aba.

Atiku stated, “To this end, without prejudice to the ongoing legal processes, I think the time has come to explore a political resolution to the Nnamdi Kanu and other associated issues. I believe that this will diffuse the pressure cooker situation in the region. It will be a win-win for all parties.”

In response, Ejimakor emphasized the importance of Atiku’s call. He posted on X, “It’s expected that @officialABAT & AGF Fagbemi will take heed as Atiku calls for a political solution to MAZI NNAMDI KANU’s detention, following that of Sen. Shehu Sanni, Prof Wole Soyinka & the epic visit to #MNK by a delegation of Igbo pantheons led by Iwuanyanwu.”

Ejimakor’s statement underscores a growing consensus among prominent figures for a political approach to resolve the tensions surrounding Kanu’s detention.

Key Arguments

  • Government Responsibility: Ibe asserts that under Nigerian law, the government must treat any sudden, suspicious, or unnatural death as a crime against the state.

  • Investigative Obligation: He argues that the government’s duty to investigate such deaths cannot be blocked or halted by the deceased’s family.

  • Failure to Act: Ibe claims the government failed in its responsibilities regarding the death, which occurred at the Uburu residence of Works Minister David Umahi.

  • Forensic Concerns: He questioned the absence of a state-conducted autopsy, stating that without one, it is impossible to determine the cause of death or identify potential foul play, negligence, or torture.

  • Required Procedures: Ibe maintains that in such cases, the police are required to secure the scene, gather forensic evidence, and question all involved parties.
