Adedamola Lapite, the Ogun State Coordinator of the Child Protection Network (CPN), emphasized this point during an outreach organized for children in slums in Abeokuta. The event was part of the activities marking International Children’s Day.
Lapite highlighted that building infrastructure alone is insufficient for the development and growth of children. In 2023, approximately 700,000 school-age children were reported to be out of school in Ogun State, according to data from the Chairman of the Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Femi Majekodunmi.
Despite the infrastructure growth achieved in Ogun State since 2023, Lapite stressed the need for policies that focus on children’s development and education.
He called for a collaborative effort to tackle the challenges facing Nigerian children, emphasizing the necessity to curb child abuse. Lapite emphasized the importance of showing children love and support, encouraging them to believe in their potential.
Lapite identified various challenges faced by Nigerian children, including physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, as well as the prevalence of out-of-school children due to poverty and violence, particularly in regions like the North and recently some parts of the South.
He urged everyone to recognize the vital role of protecting children, asserting that children should be at the center of all government policies. Lapite emphasized that without prioritizing children’s well-being, the future of the nation remains uncertain, regardless of infrastructure development efforts.
In conclusion, Lapite emphasized that safeguarding children should be a priority in all government endeavors, as they are essential for securing the nation’s future.
