In an effort to promote clean cooking energy across the country, the Federal Government (FG) launched a program yesterday to distribute free gas cylinders. The goal is to transition at least one million homes to clean cooking gas by 2030……CONTINUE READING
This initiative, part of the ‘Decade of Gas’ program, aims to distribute 250,000 gas cylinders annually, targeting women in rural communities.
At the launch event in the Apo Resettlement area of Abuja, Ekperikpe Ekpo, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), emphasized the government’s commitment to increasing domestic gas usage. Ekpo oversaw the distribution of 1,000 gas-filled 3kg cylinders to women from the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory, highlighting that the initiative would significantly benefit the health of women and girls who are most affected by traditional cooking fuels.
Ekpo stated, “We are not just starting a program today; we are on a mission to transform the lives of millions of Nigerians across our six geographical zones. By 2030, we aim to convert 250,000 households annually to clean cooking gas, an ambitious but achievable target.”
He added, “This program underscores our unwavering commitment to reducing the heavy reliance on solid fuels, such as firewood, kerosene, and charcoal, which have long been the primary energy sources for many households.”
Mr. Ed Ubong, the Coordinating Director of the ‘Decade of Gas’ program, noted that the initiative, funded by the private sector, would eliminate the use of wood and kerosene in homes. He explained that the program aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s theme, “Gas to Prosperity, a Renewed Hope.”
Ubong stated, “As part of the LPG grassroots program, we are dedicated to distributing over a million cooking cylinders, primarily to women in rural areas. Cooking gas is a cleaner alternative, and with Nigeria’s substantial gas resources, we will collaborate with the private sector, under the supervision of the Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas), to deploy over a million cylinders, distributing about 250,000 annually across Nigeria.”
