The allowances, which include housing, health, and utility expenses, are crucial for the officers, especially given the high cost of living in foreign countries. One officer highlighted that rent abroad is typically paid monthly, unlike in Nigeria where it is paid yearly, with monthly rents often exceeding $2,000. This financial burden has been exacerbated for those living abroad with their families, a requirement intended to ensure their full commitment to their duties.
The situation has left many officers struggling to cope with basic responsibilities such as feeding, education, and other family necessities. “Things are more expensive in many countries than in Nigeria,” one officer noted, emphasizing the financial strain they are under.
Adding to their frustration, the NIS’s decision to prioritize payments for only two missions has left many officers in other countries without their due allowances. This selective payment approach is seen as problematic, undermining the financial stability of many attachés and potentially causing embarrassment for the officers and the nation.
One officer explained the critical role they play in facilitating visas, supporting the Nigerian government’s ease of doing business agenda, and assisting Nigerians abroad with services such as passport renewals. The non-payment of allowances, he argued, not only hampers their ability to perform these essential duties but also risks tarnishing Nigeria’s reputation.
The officers stressed the importance of resolving these payment issues to avoid further hardships and embarrassment. Ensuring the timely and complete payment of allowances is crucial for maintaining the effective operation of the missions and supporting the officers who represent Nigeria abroad.
