Government Faces Backlash Over Insufficient Compensation For Lagos-Calabar Highway Demolition

LAGOS, May 24, 2024 – The Federal Government’s plan to demolish 750 houses for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway has ignited controversy as property owners allege that compensation is grossly inadequate….CONTINUE READING....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, confirmed the demolition during a stakeholder meeting in Lagos on Thursday. He emphasized that the project would follow the gazetted alignment, which necessitates the demolition of 750 houses, compared to 490 houses if a new alignment were adopted.

Property owners, however, have expressed strong dissatisfaction with the compensation offered, claiming it falls far short of their investments. Cajetan Onu, President of Total Energies Staff Cooperative Society, voiced his frustration: “The compensation is insufficient compared to the investment made on the developed property. We need more time to recover what we can.”

Similarly, Olanrewaju Ojo, the founder of Leisure Games, who received a compensation of N1.3 million, described the amount as “ridiculous,” stating it equates to his weekly earnings. Another anonymous property owner lamented receiving only one-sixth of the submitted claim, highlighting the severe financial impact on their businesses.

Paul Osemele, another affected landlord, criticized the compensation for not reflecting market rates, noting the loss of rental income due to tenant displacement.

Despite the uproar, Minister Umahi maintained that the government has been fair in its compensation approach. He revealed that N2.75 billion had been allocated for the initial phase of compensation, covering properties from channel 0 to channel 3 of the highway project.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is expected to span 700 kilometers, boosting tourism and linking multiple states and trade routes. The project is set to be flagged off by President Bola Tinubu on May 26, 2024.

As demolition looms, affected residents and business owners are appealing for a reevaluation of compensation to better match their investments and alleviate the financial burden imposed by the project.
