Eyewitness Amina Mohammed, a trader in the market, confirmed the shooting and subsequent death of the officer. She described the tense and chaotic scene following the shooting, noting that the officer was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

“There was tension and confusion at the Terminus Market and Ahmadu Bello Way behind Zenith Bank in Jos North this morning at about 11:30 am,” Mohammed recounted. “The Jos Metropolitan Development Board task force officials and security agencies came to enforce the state law banning street hawking. In an attempt to maintain order, a Mobile Police Officer fired a shot, and the stray bullet hit his colleague, causing panic.”

Another trader, Haruna, attributed the officer’s death to hoodlums resisting the enforcement drive. “Many hoodlums were lurking around this morning. Suddenly, we heard a gunshot when the security agents were trying to disperse traders displaying their wares on the roadside. Unfortunately, the bullet hit one of the policemen who later died at the hospital,” Haruna said.

Plateau State Police Command Spokesperson, Alabo Alfred, confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. “We are aware of the incident at the Terminus Market. Right now, we are in the office of the Jos Metropolitan Development Board over the matter, and we are investigating it,” Alfred said.

This urgency comes as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) prepares to open its candidate nomination portal.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Portal Timeline: INEC plans to issue official access codes to authorized political party officials on June 26, 2026. The nomination portal will be accessible starting June 27, 2026, and will automatically close on July 11, 2026, the firm deadline for submitting candidate particulars.

The commission argues that the electoral timetable is a highly interdependent framework; separating its components could lead to administrative chaos.

  • Call for Integrity: Professor Amupitan stressed that the success of the 2027 polls relies on both INEC’s preparedness and the commitment of political parties to uphold democratic principles, avoid violence, and promote issue-based campaigning.
