Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is currently serving as the FCT Minister, to de-escalate the ongoing political tensions in Rivers State. During the inauguration ceremony, Jonathan emphasized the importance of unity between outgoing and incoming governors for the benefit of the state. He highlighted that the current political crisis in Rivers would not contribute to its development and stressed that cooperation between Fubara and Wike is essential for the progress and prosperity of the state.
“Outgoing governors and incoming governors must know that they work together for the collective interest of the state, and that is critical,” Jonathan stated. He added, “In the case of Rivers, Honourable Minister Nyesom Wike and Governor Sim Fubara must work together to develop the lands and people of Rivers State. The tension will not help.”
Jonathan warned that destabilizing Rivers State would have detrimental effects not only on the Niger Delta region but also on the entire country, underscoring the state’s pivotal role in Nigeria. “Rivers State is very critical in this country. Rivers State is the heart of the Niger Delta. If River State is destabilized, the whole country will be destabilized,” he said.
Before the current political turmoil, Jonathan was not widely seen as an ally of Wike and his political faction. However, Governor Fubara has been seeking to build alliances with individuals holding different political views than Wike to bolster his own political group.
This call for unity from Jonathan comes at a crucial time, as Rivers State navigates its political landscape and aims for continued development and stability.
