The Organised Labour, which includes the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has agreed to participate in the upcoming negotiation meeting of the Tripartite Committee on the Minimum Wage scheduled for Tuesday. This confirmation was provided by Etim Okon, Vice President of the TUC, during an interview in Abuja……..CONTINUE READING
Previously, both the NLC and TUC walked out of negotiations when the Federal Government proposed a new minimum wage of N48,000, a figure deemed insufficient by the unions. The labour organizations argued that the government’s proposal did not adequately address the needs and aspirations of the workers. They also criticized the government for failing to provide supportive data, thus undermining the transparency and credibility of the negotiation process.
In response to the impasse, Alhaji Bukar Goni, chairman of the Tripartite Committee on the National Minimum Wage, issued a letter inviting the Organized Labour to resume discussions, indicating a willingness on the government’s part to reconsider its position and urging the unions to do the same.
The organized labour, however, maintains its stance against accepting an offer of ₦100,000 as the new minimum wage, arguing that the government has the capacity to offer more. The NLC Head of Information and Public Affairs, Benson Upah, emphasized the need for serious negotiations and stated that their proposal for a new minimum wage is ₦615,000, based on a calculated lowest minimum.
Organised Labour’s decision to rejoin the talks indicates a step towards potentially resolving the wage dispute, with the hope that both parties will come to a mutually beneficial agreement.
