A 61-year-old disabled Nigerian man, Anthony Olubunmi George, is facing the threat of deportation from the United Kingdom by the Home Office, despite having lived in the country for 38 years. In 2019, George suffered two strokes, severely affecting his speech and mobility. He has no immediate family left in Nigeria and has experienced multiple episodes of homelessness in the UK. George recounted his struggles, stating, “I don’t know how many different sofas I’ve slept on – too many to count. I don’t have my life, living the way I’m living now. My health problems since I had my stroke are my biggest worry. All I’m asking for is some kindness from the Home Office.”
Despite submitting numerous applications for leave to remain in the UK, George has faced repeated rejections, the latest being on May 7, 2024. Complications arose in 2005 when his previous solicitors submitted a falsified entry stamp in his passport, an act which has since been reported to the police and legal regulatory bodies. George maintains that he was unaware of the falsified stamp until years later.
Naga Kandiah of MTC Solicitors, George’s current lawyer, attributes George’s predicament to poor legal representation in the past. Kandiah has filed an appeal against the most recent rejection, stating, “My client has been living in limbo for 38 years, with no family, has suffered two strokes and has no family left in Nigeria. His situation is not just because of Home Office policies but also because of poor representation by previous solicitors who failed to uphold professional integrity and ethical standards.”
A Home Office spokesperson commented, “Applications have to be considered on their merits in accordance with the immigration rules, and applicants are responsible for demonstrating that they meet these rules.”
