A tragic incident unfolded in the Sabon Gari region of Minna, Niger State, where the collapse of a one-story warehouse has resulted in numerous casualties and left many trapped under the rubble. Eyewitness Aliyu Umaru, speaking to The PUNCH, described the chaotic and heart-wrenching scene as concerned citizens rushed to aid in the rescue efforts. According to Umaru, some individuals were pulled from the wreckage lifeless, while others, severely injured, were transported to the hospital in critical condition. He expressed deep concern for one particular victim who was barely breathing during the rescue.
The warehouse, originally a residential building, had been converted by its owner, a native of Kano State, without proper structural modifications to support its new purpose. This lack of adaptation is believed to have contributed significantly to the building’s collapse.
Despite initial fears, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) later issued a statement disputing reports of fatalities at the time of their assessment. Abdullahi Baba-Arah, NSEMA’s Director General, confirmed the incident and indicated that the building would be demolished.
“NSEMA received a distress call at 3:15 pm about a building collapse in the Sabon Gari area of Minna. The agency quickly alerted responding agencies for search and rescue operations,” Baba-Arah stated.
The extensive search and rescue efforts involved multiple agencies, including NSEMA, NEMA, the State Urban Development Board, the State Environmental Protection Agency, the Federal Fire Service, the police, NSCDC, NDLEA, the Red Cross, vigilant groups, and volunteers.
“As of the time of filing this report, no life was lost. Five people were rescued with various degrees of injuries, while two people escaped unhurt. An excavator was brought in to help clear the debris, and NEMA also brought life-detection gadgets. After intensive searching for about three hours, no one was found trapped,” Baba-Arah added.
The subsequent investigation revealed that the building, designed for residential use, had been poorly constructed with substandard materials. It was overloaded with soft drinks from about 25 trucks, leading to the structural failure. NSEMA confirmed that the owner lacked approval for the building’s conversion into a warehouse, and the State Urban Development Board has since ordered the complete demolition of the compromised structure.
This incident underscores the critical need for adherence to building regulations and the importance of proper structural integrity to prevent such disasters in the future.
