News reports that the affected students, drawn mainly from Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Anatomy, Human Physiology, and Medicine and Surgery, were handed punishments ranging from two to four semesters of rustication.
The students, who are in 300, 400, and 500 levels, were disciplined following the approval of the university management based on the recommendations of the Mobile Disciplinary Committee of the College of Medicine for the 2024/2025 academic session.
In a statement signed by the university registrar, Mrs. Oluwayomi, and released in Benin City through the institution’s Public Relations office, it was disclosed that out of 31 students initially considered, 27 were rusticated while four were exonerated.
According to the breakdown, 14 students are from the Department of Medical Laboratory Science (with one exonerated), 10 from Anatomy (three exonerated), while others affected include one student from Nursing, three from Human Physiology, and three from Medicine and Surgery.
The university stated that the rustication takes effect from the 2025/2026 academic session, adding that the affected students are barred from participating in any internal or external examinations during and after the period of their suspension until the sanction is fully served.
It further directed that some students will not have their results computed or courses upgraded until they complete their penalties.
Meanwhile, the institution confirmed that one of the exonerated students would have his mobile phone returned, but issued a warning as part of the final decision.
The registrar added that the decision is binding on the affected students, their sponsors, university authorities, and the general public.
