The Nigerian Senate has rejected a motion aimed at launching an independent investigation into the controversy surrounding Adeniyi Adeyemi, an individual who allegedly posed as the Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Senate’s Decision and Reasoning

During Wednesday’s plenary, Senator Suleiman Kawu (Kano South) introduced the matter as a point of urgent public importance, but Senate President Godswill Akpabio ruled against the motion. The Senate President’s reasoning included the following points:

  • Legal Status: The issue is considered sub judice because the culprit has already been charged to court.

  • Executive Action: President Bola Tinubu has already ordered the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate, and Akpabio noted that a Senate probe might be “jumping the gun”.

  • Oversight Debate: Despite the ruling, Senator Kawu maintained that the National Assembly retains a constitutional duty to exercise its oversight powers, irrespective of executive actions.

Background on the Case

The controversy involves serious criminal allegations against Adeyemi, who faces an eight-count charge including forgery, fraud, and impersonation. The case highlights several alleged actions:

  • Court Proceedings: A Federal High Court judge, Justice Umar, has ordered security agencies to arrest Adeyemi and bring him to court on September 30, following his failure to appear for his arraignment.

  • Allegations of Forgery: Adeyemi is accused of forging an appointment letter purportedly issued by President Tinubu and signed by Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila.

  • Impersonation: He allegedly used fraudulent documents to claim the title of Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council and attempted to secure office space within the State House.
