LP Crisis: Appeal Court Upholds Abure’s Sack, Fines Him ₦10 Million.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has dismissed an appeal filed by Julius Abure challenging the leadership structure of the Labour Party.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a unanimous decision delivered by a three-member panel, the court affirmed an earlier ruling of the Federal High Court, which recognised Senator Nenadi Usman as the legitimate leader of the party.

The case arose from a January 21, 2026 judgment by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which upheld a previous Supreme Court decision removing Abure as National Chairman and directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise Usman.

Dissatisfied with the ruling, Abure approached the Court of Appeal in suit No. CA/ABJ/CV/255/2026, seeking to overturn the judgment.

However, Justice Oyejoju Oyewumi, delivering the lead judgment with Justices A. B. Mohammed and Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike concurring, upheld the Federal High Court’s decision in full.

The appellate court held that the leadership dispute had already been conclusively resolved by the Supreme Court on April 4, 2025, which nullified the convention that produced Abure as National Chairman.

It further ruled that the Federal High Court acted within its constitutional authority in directing INEC to recognise Usman as the party’s leader.

The court also validated the caretaker committee led by Usman, describing it as a necessary step to fill the leadership vacuum within the party.

In its findings, the court criticised Abure for what it described as misuse of court processes and attempting to relitigate matters already settled by higher courts.

It also faulted his continued claim to leadership despite clear judicial pronouncements on the issue.

The panel concluded that the appeal lacked merit and amounted to an abuse of court process.

As a result, the court dismissed the appeal and ordered Abure to pay ₦10 million in costs for wasting judicial time.

Reacting to the judgment, Nenadi Usman described the ruling as a victory for democracy and the rule of law, commending the judiciary for maintaining its independence.

She also thanked party members for their patience during the leadership dispute and urged them to focus on upcoming party congresses and preparations ahead of the 2027 elections.
