NLC Sounds Alarm Over Alleged ₦20bn “Emergency” Spending In TCN.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has raised alarm over an alleged plan by officials at the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to spend nearly ₦20 billion on electricity grid expansion projects.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The union claimed the proposed spending, reportedly tagged as “emergency refurbishment,” appears to be a scheme to divert funds from the financially stressed utility.

In a letter to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero, the union warned that the expenditure could seriously undermine TCN’s financial stability.

Ajaero alleged that a faction within TCN was attempting to bypass standard procurement procedures under the guise of an “emergency,” potentially masking questionable transactions in complex documentation. He cautioned that if the plans proceed, TCN’s financial health could worsen, threatening its operational capacity for years.

“The national grid may remain in perpetual crisis, not due to lack of technical capacity, but because funds intended for infrastructure upgrades are being misdirected,” Ajaero said.

He highlighted specific spending proposals he described as irregular, including:

  • ₦191 million for erosion control on Tower T89 in Ihovbor, Okada

  • ₦290.65 million for fencing and drainage at the Biu 132/33KV substation

  • ₦226.02 million for work on Tower T27 along the Etsako–Okpella–Ajaokuta axis

The NLC also alleged plans to purchase specialized transformers and switchgear in separate batches from the same supplier at progressively higher prices, suggesting inflated contracts rather than genuine infrastructure investment. Officials were further accused of intending to stockpile consumables like insulators, conductors, and clamps at prices above market value under the pretext of preparing for potential grid failures.

Ajaero called on the Minister of Power to suspend all ongoing “emergency” procurement activities at TCN pending a comprehensive forensic audit. He also requested investigations into:

  • The reported sale of land behind the TCN substation in Katampe, Abuja

  • An alleged attempt to promote a staff member hired in September 2021 to Assistant General Manager by 2026, in violation of the company’s promotion guidelines.

The NLC insists urgent action is needed to safeguard TCN’s finances and ensure transparency in its operations.

According to Daaor, Samuel later invited the woman to his residence in the Ahor area of Benin City, where he allegedly stabbed her to death with a knife.

The police commissioner stated that the suspect had been taken into custody and would be charged in court after investigations were concluded.

However, Samuel has offered a different account of the incident, claiming that the woman was injured during a struggle over a knife following an argument between them.

Speaking in an interview, the 21-year-old insisted that he did not intend to kill her.
