A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has scheduled January 19 for the hearing of a defamation suit filed by Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule against Professor Zachary Gundu, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mkar, Gboko, Benue State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Governor Sule is seeking ₦100.5 billion in damages, claiming that Professor Gundu made defamatory remarks linking him to violent attacks in parts of Benue State. The statements, allegedly made on July 10, 2025, reportedly accused the governor of sheltering Fulani herdsmen responsible for attacks on local communities.

During proceedings, Justice Hamza Muazu adjourned the case following a request by the governor’s counsel for more time to respond to three pending applications filed by the defendant. The claimant’s legal team argued that additional time was needed to properly address the applications before the substantive case could proceed.

However, Professor Gundu’s counsel, Sebastine Hon, SAN, opposed the adjournment, stating that the applications had been filed since November 2025 and that further delay was unnecessary. He also indicated plans to withdraw two of the applications to streamline the process and allow the court to focus on the main issues in dispute.

After hearing arguments from both sides, Justice Muazu granted the adjournment, setting January 19 for the substantive hearing.

The case has attracted widespread attention due to the substantial damages claimed and the sensitive nature of the allegations.
