In a statement issued on Wednesday night, the spokesman to the state governor, Suleiman Bala Idris, claimed that Matawalle was deploying federal influence to harass and intimidate opposition figures in Zamfara State. He said the state government was compelled to alert the public to what it described as the misuse of federal security institutions for political purposes.

According to the statement, the state received information that Saleem Abubakar, a Technical Assistant in the Office of the Zamfara State Governor, was abducted in Abuja by operatives allegedly linked to a special security unit operating under the Office of the National Security Adviser. The state government described the incident as disturbing and unacceptable.

The spokesman alleged that the operation was coordinated through the NSA’s office and attributed responsibility to the Minister of State for Defence. He further claimed that Abubakar was taken without an arrest warrant and moved to undisclosed locations, reportedly shuffled between facilities in an attempt to conceal his whereabouts.

The Zamfara State Government warned that the incident sets a dangerous precedent, insisting that security agencies must remain neutral and not be deployed as instruments of political persecution. It said the integrity of the nation’s security architecture must not be compromised under any circumstances.

The state government also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene by directing the Office of the National Security Adviser to halt what it described as reckless actions capable of damaging Nigeria’s democratic credentials and international reputation.

It stressed that if there were any legitimate allegations against the abducted official, due process should be followed by charging him in court rather than resorting to what it termed illegal detention. The government added that it is closely monitoring the situation and is determined to pursue the matter to ensure accountability and justice.
