Speaking during an interview on Trust TV, Baba-Ahmed said the internal dynamics of the ADC and the presence of several influential political figures make Obi’s chances of securing the ticket uncertain. While acknowledging Obi’s popularity, he maintained that entrenched interests and competing ambitions within the coalition could shape the outcome of the primaries.

“I think it is very unlikely that Peter Obi will secure the ticket. If he does, I will be happy for him,” Baba-Ahmed said, stressing that the contest within the ADC is expected to be keenly fought among heavyweight aspirants.

He also addressed speculation about the possibility of Obi accepting a vice-presidential position if offered, noting that such an option had already been ruled out by the former Anambra State governor himself. Baba-Ahmed explained that Obi has consistently maintained that he is not interested in a deputy role, having invested years preparing for the presidency.

According to Baba-Ahmed, the same stance applies to other prominent figures within the coalition, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, whom he said would also be unwilling to settle for second-in-command positions. He argued that all major contenders within the ADC are aiming for the top job.

Reflecting on past political alliances, Baba-Ahmed pointed to the 2015 elections as an example of how unity and clear leadership can determine electoral success. He noted that leaders within the All Progressives Congress (APC) rallied behind the late Muhammadu Buhari, with Bola Tinubu playing a strategic role in mobilising support and executing a long-term political plan that eventually led to victory.

He added that the success of that coalition was driven by discipline, cohesion and a shared objective, factors he suggested remain critical for any opposition alliance seeking to challenge the ruling party in 2027.
