Peter Obi had earlier expressed concern over the alleged failure of the Federal Government and the Nigeria Football Federation to honour agreed bonuses for the national team, warning that the issue was harming Nigeria’s global image and undermining the morale of players who have continued to deliver positive results on the pitch.

In a statement shared on social media, Obi lamented what he described as the country’s persistent inability to avoid negative publicity, even at moments when Nigerians require unity and uplifting news. He noted that the Super Eagles have remained a major source of national pride both locally and in the diaspora, particularly through their recent string of victories, but are now being distracted by avoidable administrative shortcomings.

Obi stressed that disputes over match bonuses were unnecessary and could negatively affect the team’s focus ahead of important fixtures. He questioned how long such embarrassments would persist, arguing that denying players their allowances at a time of national celebration was unacceptable.

Reacting to the remarks, Onanuga dismissed Obi’s criticism as politically motivated, accusing him of deliberately turning every issue into a tool for attacking the current administration. He described the former Anambra State governor as bitter and questioned why he consistently sought to politicise matters that should be handled without emotional or partisan undertones.

Onanuga’s response has further fueled online debate, drawing sharp reactions from supporters of both political figures, as discussions continue over governance, accountability, and the welfare of Nigeria’s national sports teams.
