Dele Momodu, a prominent chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has criticized calls for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to step aside in the 2027 presidential race, describing such demands as driven by emotion and sentiment and labeling them a “monumental tragedy,” according to Nivo News.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The statement comes after some supporters of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, who recently joined the ADC following his 2023 third-place finish with over six million votes, urged the party to grant him its presidential ticket. Momodu dismissed the notion that Atiku should withdraw, emphasizing that the former Vice President has no reason to abandon his ambition.

Momodu highlighted what he called a recurring narrative in the media aimed at undermining Atiku’s candidacy. He argued that criticisms citing Atiku’s age or fitness are unfounded, noting that President Bola Tinubu faces similar scrutiny without calls for him to step aside. The veteran journalist also praised Atiku’s extensive experience, education, business achievements, contributions to democracy, and leadership credentials, asserting that these qualities make him exceptionally qualified.

He said, “Asking our most experienced and cosmopolitan aspirant to sacrifice his credentials on the altar of raw emotion and primordial sentiments is a monumental tragedy.” Momodu concluded that Atiku’s competence and record distinguish him from many of his contemporaries and that attempts to discredit him based on emotion rather than evidence are misplaced.
