Eric Chelle Marks First Year As Super Eagles Coach With Impressive Record.
Eric Chelle has marked his first year as head coach of the Super Eagles, a period that has seen Nigeria reassert itself as a continental football powerhouse. According to Nivo News, Chelle was appointed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on January 7, 2025, amid divided public opinion, but his tenure has largely quelled early scepticism.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The 48-year-old Malian has overseen 16 matches with the senior national team, recording 10 wins, five draws, and only one defeat. During this period, Nigeria scored 34 goals while conceding 15. Chelle took over following a seven-month coaching vacuum after the resignation of Finidi George in July 2024. Interim manager Austin Eguavoen had led the team through AFCON 2025 qualification, but inconsistent results in the early stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers had left the squad in need of stability.
Chelle’s appointment followed several failed coaching negotiations, including collapsed deals with Bruno Labbadia and rumours involving former France coach Laurent Blanc. His first competitive outings, including a win over Rwanda in Kigali, suggested tactical clarity, though a late equaliser against Zimbabwe exposed vulnerabilities. The coach shifted from the previously favoured back three to a diamond midfield and a more direct attacking approach, integrating new players like Tolu Arokodare, Igoh Ogbu, and Akor Adams into the squad.
Despite setbacks, including group-stage elimination at the 2024 African Nations Championship, Chelle has guided the Super Eagles to consistent success. Nigeria has scored in every senior international match under his leadership, and his teams average just over two points per match, ranking him among the nation’s most effective coaches in recent decades.
At AFCON 2025, the Super Eagles have won four consecutive matches, showcasing fluid attacking play led by Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman, and Victor Osimhen. Defensive lapses and tactical decisions remain areas to address, but Chelle’s focus is now on Saturday’s quarter-final clash against Algeria, a match that could define the first year of his tenure.
