The suit, lodged on January 8, 2026, claims that Ali-Keffi made and circulated false and damaging statements accusing Buratai of financing terrorism, associating with Boko Haram suspects, and concealing individuals involved in terror-related activities. Buratai’s legal team, led by A.I. Aliyu and A.M. Hassan of Law Plus Consult, described the statements, published on multiple news platforms and social media outlets, as libellous and injurious to his reputation.

Court documents state that Ali-Keffi, in interviews conducted in 2025, insinuated that Buratai was involved in terrorism-related conspiracies during his tenure as army chief. Buratai maintained that these allegations are entirely false, noting that he has never been investigated, charged, or convicted for terrorism or related offences. He said the publications have portrayed him as corrupt and unpatriotic, causing serious harm to his honour and international standing.

The former army chief is requesting that the court compel Ali-Keffi to retract the statements publicly, issue an unreserved apology across the same media channels, and pay ₦1 billion in general damages. Buratai is also seeking a permanent injunction to prevent further defamatory statements and an order covering all legal costs. The writ requires Ali-Keffi to respond within 21 days, with the court authorized to proceed in his absence if he fails to appear. As of this report, no hearing date has been scheduled, and the defendant has yet to file a response.
