The order was issued on Saturday by the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice, which said the decision was necessary to preserve stability and continuity of governance in the country amid what it described as the president’s “forced absence.” The court stated that Rodríguez would temporarily take charge of the nation’s executive authority to ensure the uninterrupted administration of state affairs and the defence of national sovereignty.

In its ruling, the court explained that further deliberations would be held to establish the appropriate legal framework for managing the unfolding situation. It noted that the process would focus on safeguarding the continuity of the state, maintaining effective governance, and protecting Venezuela’s sovereignty in light of the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the president’s detention.

Maduro was taken into custody in the early hours of Saturday during an operation conducted by U.S. forces, a development that has triggered strong political and diplomatic reactions both within Venezuela and across the international community. The Supreme Court’s decision effectively positions Rodríguez as the country’s interim leader pending further legal and political resolutions.

Meanwhile, Maduro has reportedly arrived in New York in the United States, where he is expected to face trial over arms trafficking and drug-related charges.
