Speaking at a recent programme at the RCCG Redemption City, Adeboye urged Christians to exercise wisdom and caution when reacting to prophetic messages, warning against the increasing spread of sensational and questionable prophecies. Although he did not identify any cleric, he alluded to a widely circulated prediction ahead of the 2025 AFCON in Morocco which suggested that Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman should not be selected if Nigeria hoped to succeed in the tournament.

The prophecy drew widespread attention on social media, with many interpreting it as a sign of impending failure should the Atalanta star feature for the national team. However, developments on the field appeared to disprove the claim, as Lookman scored the decisive goal in Nigeria’s 2–1 opening win over Tanzania before delivering an outstanding display against Tunisia, where he found the net once and provided two assists in a thrilling 3–2 victory that secured the Super Eagles’ passage to the knockout stage.

Recalling the incident, Adeboye told his congregation that he found the prophecy amusing, noting that the player who was allegedly warned against ended up playing a decisive role in the team’s success. He said he simply gave thanks to God after seeing the outcome.

While acknowledging that genuine prophecy remains an important aspect of the Christian faith, Adeboye stressed the need for discernment, cautioning believers against accepting every spiritual claim as divinely inspired. He emphasised that true breakthroughs are rooted in authentic divine guidance rather than dramatic or attention-seeking declarations, advising Christians to be careful in how they handle prophets truly sent by God.

The RCCG leader also clarified that he does not see himself as a prophet, describing himself instead as a pastor who occasionally receives divine messages, which he believes would leave a lasting impact on those who heard them.
