Return Tinubu’s ₦30 Billion Now, Fayose Tells Oyo Governor.
According to Nivo News, former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has demanded that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, return the ₦30 billion intervention fund released by the Federal Government to support victims of the January 16, 2024 Bodija explosion in Ibadan.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Fayose made the call after Governor Makinde publicly admitted that the fund had remained unused since it was received. In a statement issued on Thursday through his spokesperson, Femi Philips, the former governor described it as surprising that the Oyo State government failed to inform residents about the receipt of the ₦30 billion, as well as an additional ₦20 billion balance, until public controversy emerged over the total ₦50 billion intervention package.
He argued that since the governor had acknowledged keeping the ₦30 billion in a bank account since 2024, the money should be returned to the Federal Government to ensure it is deployed for the benefit of the explosion victims. Fayose added that the Federal Government has adequate structures to directly reach those affected, especially if the state government has chosen to politicise their welfare.
The former governor further noted that the funds would have generated significant interest while sitting idle in the bank. He estimated that ₦30 billion left untouched for about 18 months would have accrued no less than ₦4.5 billion at a 10 per cent interest rate, insisting that Governor Makinde should therefore return at least ₦34.5 billion to the Federal Government.
Fayose stressed that transparency and accountability are essential requirements of public office, explaining that he raised the issue to highlight what he described as hypocrisy in the handling of the matter by the Oyo State governor. He accused Makinde of selectively revealing details of his meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu while failing to disclose information about the intervention funds requested and approved for the explosion victims.
According to Fayose, if the governor had not publicly highlighted aspects of the presidential meeting that favoured him while concealing the approval of the ₦50 billion intervention fund, the controversy would not have arisen. He also cautioned Makinde against politicising the issue and dragging the President’s image into what he described as personal political ambition.
He warned that selective disclosure of information that benefits one party while withholding details meant to support others would not be tolerated, adding that efforts to damage the President’s reputation for political gain would be firmly resisted.
