He made the appeal while commending residents of the South-East for the recognition and respect they have shown him despite diverse ethnic and political affiliations.
Makinde spoke in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, during his 58th birthday celebration and the launch of a book organized by PDP chieftain Chief Ali Odefa on Saturday.
According to the governor, true federalism and unity in diversity are the only paths to ensuring equality for all Nigerians. “It would be a great birthday gift for me if we make up our minds and actively call for true federalism in the Federal Republic of Nigeria; we must not be bystanders,” he said.
He further emphasized that the respect he received in the South-East affirmed the sincerity of the “handshake across the Niger” and stated that his visit aligned with God’s plan. Makinde also praised Odefa, describing him as a close friend and political adviser.
The governor highlighted the influence of Igbo people across various sectors and urged the region to continue contributing toward a Nigeria that practices genuine federalism, beyond party lines.
Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, represented by Deputy Governor Patricia Obila, described the book, The Seyi Makinde Story, as a wealth of knowledge and encouraged attendees to engage with its message. He commended Makinde’s achievements in Oyo State, particularly in infrastructure, education, and health, adding, “If Nigeria had 80% of people like you, this country would be a better place. I congratulate you and thank God for your life.”
Odefa, in his remarks, described Makinde as a courageous and non-tribalistic leader, revealing that he had honored the governor by naming one of his sons after him.
