Key attendees included House Appropriations Committee Vice Chair Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart, Rep. Robert Aderholt, Rep. Riley Moore, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Rep. Brian Mast, Africa Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Chris Smith, U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom Chair Vicky Hartzler, Alliance Defending Freedom International’s Sean Nelson, and Council on Foreign Relations’ Ebenezer Obadare.
Rep. Díaz-Balart emphasized the moral and strategic importance of defending religious liberty globally, pledging to advance policies that protect individuals from violence due to their faith. Rep. Aderholt described the crisis as one that cannot be ignored and expressed support for Nigeria’s Christian communities. Rep. Moore highlighted the designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern and underlined the urgency of confronting the ongoing persecution.
Chairman Mast characterized the situation not as inter-communal violence but as a deliberate campaign of religious cleansing by groups including Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province, and radicalized Fulani militants. He called for disarmament of militias, the return of displaced families, and justice for perpetrators. Rep. Smith reinforced that both Christians and moderate Muslims face extreme threats, criticizing the Nigerian government’s failure to protect its citizens while pledging U.S. support for the persecuted.
Expert witnesses detailed the scope of the violence. Vicky Hartzler cited recent attacks, including the abduction of 303 children and 12 teachers from St. Mary’s School in Niger State, and attacks on churches and mosques across multiple states. She emphasized the importance of U.S. engagement to improve accountability, security assistance, early warning systems, and conflict mediation in Nigeria.
Sean Nelson recounted firsthand accounts of Christians facing imprisonment, abduction, forced conversions, and attacks under draconian blasphemy laws, highlighting the government’s systemic failure to protect vulnerable communities. Ebenezer Obadare identified Boko Haram as the central threat to Nigeria’s stability, advocating for U.S. pressure on the Nigerian government to neutralize terror groups, make Sharia law unconstitutional in northern states, and disband enforcement groups imposing Islamic law.
The briefing underscored a coordinated U.S. effort to address religious persecution in Nigeria through both policy pressure and security cooperation, aiming to safeguard vulnerable communities and counter extremist violence.

Borno Herdsman Sentenced To Death For Fatal Cutlass Attack On Fellow Herder.
A High Court in Maiduguri has sentenced an 18-year-old herdsman, Adamu Mohammed, to death for the killing of a fellow herdsman, 19-year-old Adamu Ali, during a clash in Auno, Konduga local government area of Borno State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Justice Mohammed Maina ruled that the prosecution had established beyond reasonable doubt that Mohammed struck Ali on the head with a cutlass during an altercation in the bush on January 19, 2025. Ali subsequently died at the Borno State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri.
Court records indicate that although Mohammed initially pleaded guilty, the plea was formally recorded as not guilty due to the capital nature of the offense. The prosecution presented two witnesses and submitted exhibits, including Mohammed’s own statements and a medical report, confirming that he attacked the deceased with a cutlass.
The defense claimed that Mohammed acted in self-defense, but the court dismissed the argument, citing inconsistencies in his testimony and a lack of evidence that he could not have retreated to avoid the fatal blow. Justice Maina described the force used as excessive and unjustified, noting that Mohammed’s actions met the criteria for culpable homicide punishable by death under Section 191(a) of the Borno State Penal Code Law, 2023. Mohammed was subsequently sentenced to death by hanging.
