Wike made the call on Wednesday when the Board Chairman, Hon. Chibudom Nwuche, led members of the Commission on a courtesy visit to his office. He congratulated them on their appointment by the President and emphasized that their selection was a demonstration of trust and confidence, urging them not to betray the expectations placed upon them.
The Minister reminded the delegation that their primary responsibility was to deliver visible progress to the people of the South-South region. He insisted that the best way to justify their appointments was to work relentlessly to actualize the President’s development vision. According to him, their loyalty should reflect in the successful implementation of initiatives that bring pride to the Commission and the administration.
Wike cautioned the team against allowing political influence or divisive interests to distract them from their mission, stressing that the Commission was created solely to drive regional development. He questioned their readiness to embrace selfless service, leadership discipline, and a commitment to the President’s developmental goals.
He warned against the misuse of public funds and the politicization of the Commission’s activities, urging members to work as a unified body. Wike laid out clear principles for project implementation, advising the Commission to avoid diverting resources or abandoning its primary mandate. He urged strict financial discipline, insisting that only projects backed by adequate funding should be awarded, and warned against awarding contracts for personal or political gain.
The Minister also called for robust stakeholder engagement, urging the Commission to consult state governors before deciding on projects to avoid duplication of existing state and local government efforts.
Wike applauded President Tinubu for establishing regional development bodies, noting that such decisions require vision and courage. He said the initiative was unprecedented, adding that previous administrations lacked the boldness to embark on similar efforts.
In his remarks, SSDC Board Chairman Hon. Chibudom Nwuche expressed deep appreciation for Wike’s role in the formation of the Commission and his consistent support. He praised the Minister’s leadership style, describing it as result-oriented, and pledged that the Board would replicate such efficiency, especially in infrastructure delivery.
Nwuche assured Wike and President Tinubu of the Commission’s unwavering commitment to advancing development in the South-South region. The Commission’s Managing Director, Miss Usoro Akpabio, also reaffirmed this dedication, thanking the Minister for his support and promising that the Commission would execute its mandate diligently to bring tangible improvement to the region.
