The finalists were selected during the Enugu Regional Finals held at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Enugu, which featured top young spellers from the Southeast and South-South regions. From an initial pool of over 500 pupils screened across both regions, 20 qualified for the regional stage, out of which seven — Nelson Ede Chidibem, Praise Ihionu, Emeke Nwokeocha Samuel, Treasure Oyibosu, Mitchel Atanu Ufedo, Munachimso Onyemaechi, and Oyingba Douglas-Naingba — secured their spots for the national competition.
MTN’s Regional Operations Manager (East), Callima Inino, expressed pride in the students’ performance, describing their success as a reflection of hard work, resilience, and excellence. He emphasized that the mPulse Spelling Bee continues to inspire literacy, ambition, and confidence among Nigerian youths.
“This is the seventh edition, and each year we strive to improve and expand the project,” Inino noted. “Having our top seven pupils represent the Enugu Region is a great achievement for the pupils, their schools, and their parents.”
He announced that the overall winner of the national competition will receive a ₦5 million education grant, a smartphone, and a laptop, while also serving as MTN’s CEO for a day and becoming the mPulse Face of the Year. The winner’s teacher will be rewarded with ₦500,000, while their school will receive 10 laptops, 10 routers, and a ₦10 million development grant.
Temilolu Salako, MTN’s Senior Manager for Youth Development, described the contest as more than a spelling challenge but a platform to inspire dreams and self-belief. “We’re not just spelling words; we’re nurturing dreams. Every letter you spell today represents your future,” he told the pupils.
The Master Speller, Mr. Titus Bankole, encouraged participants to see the competition as a foundation for growth, urging them to refine their pronunciation and vocabulary skills ahead of the national finals.
Also speaking at the event, Paul Obe Okechukwu, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Mobilisation, commended MTN for its dedication to education and youth empowerment. He encouraged the finalists to continue striving for excellence and urged other participants not to lose hope.
The atmosphere at the event was filled with excitement as students, teachers, and parents celebrated the seven young champions who will now represent the Enugu Region in the national mPulse Spelling Bee finale in Lagos.
