Customs Smash Kaduna Smuggling Ring, Seize ₦48.5m Cannabis And ₦220m Contraband

The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone B of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted 185 blocks of cannabis sativa valued at ₦48.5 million, along with assorted contraband worth over ₦220 million, in a series of operations conducted in Kaduna State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, the Unit’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Customs Saidu Nuruddeen, disclosed the seizures in a statement issued on behalf of the Comptroller on Thursday. Nuruddeen explained that the cannabis consignment was recovered on August 21 around 3:30 a.m. when operatives stopped a vehicle along the Zaria flyover on the Kaduna–Zaria Expressway, acting on credible intelligence.

A male suspect was apprehended after officers discovered nine sacks containing 185 compressed blocks of cannabis sativa weighing 89.6 kilograms. The seized drugs, with a duty paid value of ₦48,562,500, have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution under inter-agency collaboration protocols.

Nuruddeen further revealed that, in a separate operation, officers intercepted three vehicles conveying prohibited items including 456 bags of foreign parboiled rice (50kg each), 8,100 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), 178 bales of second-hand clothing, 225 cartons of spaghetti, 107 used tyres, and 37 electric shock devices. The total duty paid value of these seizures is estimated at ₦220,457,336.48.

Comptroller Aliyu Alkali commended Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi for his support and reaffirmed the Service’s determination to sustain its clampdown on smuggling and illicit trade. The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of seven suspected militia herdsmen in connection with the abduction of passengers travelling in an 18-seater Benue Links bus along the Makurdi–Otukpo road last Wednesday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The victims, which included candidates of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) heading to Otukpo for their examinations, have all been successfully rescued.

Speaking while briefing Governor Hyacinth Alia in Makurdi during the presentation of the freed victims, the Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, said the rescue operation was achieved through coordinated efforts of multiple security agencies.

He explained that five of the abducted passengers were first released, while the remaining 13 were rescued on Sunday morning without injuries.

According to him, the combined pressure from security forces, supported by the state government and the Inspector-General of Police, led to the successful outcome of the operation.

He also noted that clearance operations have begun across forest areas in the state to flush out criminal groups, in line with directives from security authorities.

Governor Hyacinth Alia, while receiving the rescued passengers, expressed concern over rising cases of kidnapping in the state but welcomed the safe return of all 18 victims.

He further directed the state health authorities to conduct medical evaluations for all rescued persons and promised government support for those affected.
