Published

on

With less than two years to the next general election, Nigeria’s political landscape is already heating up as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gear up for what promises to be a fierce battle for the nation’s top seat in 2027.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Both parties, at separate National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings held in Abuja on Thursday, unveiled new strategies and leadership adjustments aimed at strengthening their chances at the polls. While the APC is working to consolidate its hold on power, the PDP is positioning itself as a credible alternative ready to reclaim the Presidency.

APC’s major shake‑up
At the APC NEC meeting, the party formally announced the appointment of Yilwatda Nentawe, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, as its substantive National Chairman. The motion for his nomination was moved by Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Hope Uzodinma.

Governor Uzodinma stated:

“It will be a thing of joy for me to take advantage of this moment to drive this motion. I, Senator Hope Uzodinma, Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, humbly move that the National Executive Committee approve the zoning of the National Chairman of the APC back to the North Central from the North East, and the National Legal Adviser from the North Central back to the North West.

That the Office of the Deputy National Secretary of the APC, already zoned to the North Central, be filled by Professor Yilwatda Nentawe from Plateau State as National Chairman of the APC.

That the current National Legal Adviser, Professor Karim Kana, shall now serve as the National Deputy Secretary, and Barrister Murtala from Katsina State in the North West be nominated and elected as the National Legal Adviser of the APC.

Due to ongoing political activities in the party, the tenure of ward and local government executives is extended to December 31, 2025.”

The motion was seconded by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and adopted through a voice vote, after which Nentawe was sworn in as the seventh National Chairman of the APC. His election follows the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje in June due to health reasons.

Nentawe’s pledge
In his acceptance speech, Nentawe, 56, an engineer, academic, and former APC governorship candidate in Plateau State, thanked President Bola Tinubu, APC governors, National Assembly members, and other stakeholders for the trust placed in him.

“I pledge, without hesitation, that I will work with everyone in the party to unite, build, and expand the APC with you at the centre of every decision,” he said.
“Let me express my profound gratitude to God and the party leadership—from the President to the governors and NEC members—for entrusting me with this responsibility at such a critical moment.”

Setting the stage for 2027
The leadership changes and strategies announced by both APC and PDP signal the start of an intense political contest, with both parties already mapping out moves to win over voters and shape the narrative ahead of the 2027 general elections.
