With just hours to go before the highly anticipated National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC), tension is mounting within the ruling party amid swirling rumours of a potential shake-up in its leadership structure.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Although the NEC session is slated for Thursday in Abuja, the National Working Committee (NWC) held a closed-door meeting on Monday that lasted two hours and ended without a press briefing, leaving its agenda shrouded in secrecy.

Party insiders told Daily Trust that the NWC has already forwarded a draft agenda for the NEC meeting to President Bola Tinubu for approval.

One source said:

“The meeting will hold as planned, but we can’t predict the kind of politics the president and other key stakeholders might bring to the table.
At the NWC level, the draft agenda includes leadership transition, an elective convention, congresses, and e‑registration of members, among other issues.”

Barrister Bashir Maidugu, a member of the 2022 APC Constitution Review Committee, explained that the party’s constitution empowers the NEC to appoint a substantive national chairman.

“It was in this same spirit that Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje was nominated immediately after Senator Abdullahi Adamu resigned. However, such nominations must still be ratified at the next national convention,” he said.

Quoting Article 13:3(ii) of the APC Constitution, Maidugu noted that the NEC may “discharge all functions of the national convention in between national conventions.” He also cited Section 13.3(c), which limits acting national officers—including the national chairman—from serving beyond 12 calendar months.

Amid these legal provisions, speculation is rife that the current NWC could be dissolved and replaced by a 13‑member caretaker committee.

A party insider disclosed:

“Some NWC members remain loyal to Ganduje, who is no longer in office and cannot be fully trusted. Others are allegedly flirting with the opposition. There’s a growing sentiment that they should be removed ahead of 2027.”

This wouldn’t be unprecedented. In 2020, the NEC dissolved the Adams Oshiomhole-led NWC and installed then-Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni as chairman of the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, which later produced Senator Abdullahi Adamu as chairman.

However, APC’s National Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, dismissed reports of any impending dissolution as speculation.

On whether Thursday’s NEC meeting would go ahead, he said:

“Yes, affirmed.”

But pressed on the agenda, he replied:

“No, I don’t have it. I’m not privy to that.”

Regarding rumours of an NWC dissolution, he added:

“I can’t confirm that. I’ve heard people mention it, but for now those are just rumours. I’ll only know once there’s an official communication.”

On whether Ali Bukar Dalori’s acting role might be ratified, Ibrahim said:

“That’s my hope, but it’s not something I can confirm. The NEC can decide anything.”
