Borno Govt Drops Bombshell: Bloated Payroll Blocking N70,000 Minimum Wage for LG Workers!
The Borno State Government has explained why it is currently unable to implement the ₦70,000 minimum wage for local government workers in the state.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking during a high-level meeting at the Government House, Maiduguri, on Saturday night, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry for Local Government and Emirate Affairs, Modu Alhaji Mustapha, attributed the delay to what he described as an over-bloated workforce across the 27 local government areas (LGAs).
Mustapha disclosed that Borno’s LGAs collectively employ about 90,000 staff—a figure he noted is unusually high when compared with larger states like Kano, which has a population three times bigger but only about 30,000 workers across 44 LGAs.
“While the idea of a ₦70,000 minimum wage is commendable, the reality on ground in Borno is far more complex,” he said.
“Our local governments are overstretched. The sheer size of the workforce has become a major obstacle to implementing the new wage.”
He cited Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) as an example, explaining that its monthly federal allocation sometimes falls below ₦700 million, whereas it would need about ₦778 million to pay the minimum wage alone—leaving no funds for other critical services like health, water supply, and security.
Governor Babagana Zulum, who also addressed the meeting, tasked all 27 local government chairmen to return to their areas, consult with stakeholders, and propose practical solutions.
“I want to emphasize that the ₦72,000 minimum wage has already been implemented for state civil servants and all primary school teachers,” Zulum said.
He, however, ruled out retrenchment, directing the councils to devise a mechanism that would make payment feasible.
The governor appealed for patience from local government workers, assuring them that his administration is working closely with all LGAs to ensure the minimum wage becomes a reality.

Wike Warns: Illegal Structures on Embassy Land Will Be Demolished.
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has condemned the construction of buildings on land allocated to foreign embassies in Katampe Extension, Abuja, describing them as illegal.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking on Friday during a tour of ongoing infrastructure projects across the FCT, Wike said the unauthorized structures would be demolished.
During the inspection, the minister visited several roads and projects, including the route linking Wuse to the Central Area, a road near the Body of Benchers complex, and the Tungan-Madaki road off the airport corridor. He expressed confidence that many of the projects would be completed ahead of the third anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
On the illegal constructions, Wike explained that the plots were originally allocated on March 18, 2008, to various diplomatic missions for residential use. However, an illegal developer seized the land and began construction without approval from the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA).
“This land was allocated to various embassies in 2008. Someone just took over and started developing it without FCDA approval. We cannot allow this kind of land invasion to continue,” he said.
The affected diplomatic missions include Thailand, Bulgaria, Syria, Somalia, Serbia and Montenegro, Japan, Austria, Switzerland, Senegal, and the Palestine Liberation Organisation. Part of the land had also been reserved for a 132/133KV power station for the Power Holding Company of Nigeria.
Wike stated that the FCTA has directed the Department of Development Control to demolish all illegal structures and restore the land to its original purpose. “I have instructed that every building on this land be brought down,” he said, adding that the embassies would be formally notified to take possession of their plots.
The minister also revealed that the suspected developer had been arrested and would face prosecution. “The man has been arrested, and the police are investigating. He will be charged in court soon,” Wike said.
