A former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo (retd.), has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader who was firm yet fair.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Gambo — who served under Buhari from 2021 to 2023 — said the late president exemplified discipline, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to national service.

According to him, Buhari, as a soldier, stood out for his courage, steadfast discipline, and incorruptible character. As a statesman and former Commander‑in‑Chief of the Armed Forces, he said Buhari embodied the highest ideals of public service, personal sacrifice, and patriotic dedication.

Gambo recalled that Buhari appointed him Chief of Naval Staff in January 2021, describing the appointment as one of the greatest privileges of his life.

“His journey through Nigeria’s turbulent political and security landscape remains a testament to his resilience, fortitude, and selfless patriotism.
I remember with deep gratitude and humility how he entrusted me with the honour of serving our nation as Chief of Naval Staff in January 2021. That appointment, which lasted until the end of his tenure in 2023, remains one of the most cherished experiences of my career,” he said.

Gambo fondly recounted hosting Buhari at the Navy’s Presidential Fleet Review in Lagos, barely a week before Buhari left office — an event he described as the president’s last major military engagement and a celebration of the transformation of the Nigerian Navy under his watch.

“In him, I found not just a Commander‑in‑Chief, but a father figure — firm yet fair, deeply principled, and genuinely invested in the welfare and professional growth of those he led,” the retired admiral added.

He praised Buhari’s impact on military reforms, particularly in enhancing personnel welfare, modernising military hardware, and granting service chiefs greater operational autonomy. Gambo noted that the former president’s influence on his life and the lives of countless others, both in uniform and beyond, would remain indelible.

The retired naval chief also commended Buhari’s austere lifestyle, staunch anti‑corruption stance, and compassion for the less privileged, describing him as “a man of honesty, simplicity, and unshakable patriotism.”

He reminisced about his mother, a longtime admirer of Buhari, who was overjoyed when he was appointed naval chief and later had the chance to meet Buhari after he left office.

“Though his physical presence is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in every institution he strengthened, every reform he championed, and every life he touched. His legacy is a light that will never fade, Insha Allah,” Gambo concluded.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.

The party further alleged that the move is aimed at distracting attention from governance challenges in the state.
