Heartbreaking Fight: Young Girl’s Life Hangs on ₦19m Kidney Transplant”

Daniel Paul, a teacher and father of 10-year-old David, who has been diagnosed with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD), is appealing to kind-hearted individuals, groups, and corporate bodies to help raise ₦19 million for his son’s urgent kidney transplant.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a heartfelt interview with PUNCH Online on Wednesday, Paul explained that his family had exhausted all their resources in the fight to save David’s life. The young boy now undergoes dialysis twice daily—an expensive treatment that costs about ₦160,000 every week.

“So far, we’ve spent over ₦4.5 million on David’s treatment,” Paul said, adding that doctors have recommended an urgent kidney transplant, which would cost around ₦19 million if done in Nigeria and up to ₦30 million if conducted abroad, such as in India.

“We’ve used up our meagre earnings, borrowed heavily from friends, neighbours, and church members. But the situation has worsened. He’s now battling Stage 4 CKD, tuberculosis, heart failure, and high blood pressure,” he said.

“We’ve borrowed ₦1.5 million and received ₦1.6 million in donations. Altogether, we’ve spent ₦4.5 million. But we’re now at our limit. The transplant is urgent, and we just don’t have the funds.”

David’s health crisis began on February 4, 2024, when he suddenly began vomiting a mixture of food, water, and blood during dinner. Alarmed, his mother rushed him to the Model Primary Health Centre at Kampala Junction, Mile 1 in Port Harcourt. Initial tests for HIV and infections came back negative, and he was treated for malaria as an outpatient for three days.

Though he seemed stable and even continued going to school, by April his body had begun to swell noticeably. Further tests led to a referral to either Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) or the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), with a suspected case of nephrotic syndrome.

As David’s condition deteriorated—with severe swelling, convulsions, and dangerously high blood pressure—the family rushed him to the Military Hospital in Port Harcourt, where he was managed throughout April and May. But when the hospital could no longer cope, they requested a transfer to UPTH. The family instead opted for RSUTH due to proximity.

In February 2025, David was briefly moved to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) in Akwa Ibom. However, the cost of repeated tests prompted the family to return him to RSUTH, where he is currently receiving care.

Paul is now pleading with well-meaning Nigerians, NGOs, and government agencies to come to their aid.

“We are financially drained and don’t know what else to do. Please, we’re appealing to philanthropic Nigerians. The ₦19 million estimate is if the transplant is done locally. If it has to be done abroad, the cost will be significantly higher due to visa processing and foreign exchange,” he said.
