Troops of Operation Delta Safe (OPDS) have recovered stolen crude oil and petroleum products valued at over ₦3.5 billion in sustained operations against oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and piracy across the Niger Delta region in the past three months.

This was disclosed by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen Markus Kangye, during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday.

Kangye said the operations led to the dismantling of 174 illegal refining sites and the seizure of 45 vehicles used by criminals. Among the items recovered were 2,381,239 litres of stolen crude oil, 605,393 litres of illegally refined diesel (AGO), 41,465 litres of kerosene (DPK), and 26,905 litres of petrol (PMS).

Additionally, 12 suspects were apprehended and various weapons, explosives, and logistics equipment were recovered from the syndicates. “During a clearance operation in Oron LGA of Akwa Ibom on June 28, troops rescued 15 victims abandoned by suspected pirates,” Kangye added.

He also detailed the destruction of 52 crude oil cooking ovens, 21 dugout pits, 11 boats, 36 storage tanks, 36 drums, and 25 illegal refining sites, along with the recovery of pumping machines, drilling equipment, tricycles, motorcycles, mobile phones, and six vehicles.

Providing updates on broader military operations from April to June, Kangye said the armed forces killed multiple high-profile terrorists, arrested 1,191 suspects, and rescued 543 kidnapped victims across different theatres of operation.

He also confirmed the death of Yellow Danbokkolo, a notorious bandit kingpin, who succumbed to injuries from a firefight with troops.

Kangye said 682 terrorists and their families voluntarily surrendered to troops within the same period, while numerous arms traffickers and kidnappers on the military’s watchlist—including Buhari Umar, Hassam Mohammed, Saleh Sani, and Shittu Muazu Bakassi—were captured.
