Gani Adams Fires Back at Presidency: ‘Mere Recognition Can’t Bury ₦45 Billion Debt to Abiola’

Published

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has called on President Bola Tinubu to address the demand made by the family of the late Chief Moshood Abiola regarding a ₦45 billion debt allegedly owed to them by the Federal Government.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The demand by Abiola’s family follows recent remarks by former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, who urged President Tinubu to compensate the family as a step toward national healing and justice.

Lamido rekindled the decades-old controversy surrounding unpaid funds allegedly due to Abiola. He claimed that the late business mogul’s company, International Telephone & Telegraph, completed major telecommunications contracts for the military government in the 1970s but was never fully compensated.

Speaking at the launch of his memoir, Being True to Myself, in Abuja in May 2025, Lamido said former Head of State, Murtala Muhammed, had acknowledged the debt before his assassination in 1976, and that Abiola later confirmed the outstanding amount to him during a private meeting shortly before his arrest in 1994.

He described the unresolved payment as a “double punishment,” arguing that after being denied the presidency in the wake of the annulled June 12, 1993 election, Abiola was also denied what was rightfully owed to him. Lamido suggested that settling the debt would not only serve as symbolic justice but also reaffirm President Tinubu’s commitment to honouring pro-democracy heroes.

In an interview with Punch, Gani Adams stated that appointing one of Abiola’s sons to Tinubu’s administration is insufficient, urging broader recognition of Abiola’s sacrifice.

“That money should be paid to the Abiola family. This is not merely about compensation—it’s about honouring a man who sacrificed everything for our democracy. Appointing one of his children isn’t enough,” Adams said.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Jamiu Abiola told Punch that more information was needed before the family could take further steps.

“The former governor didn’t specify what the money was owed for or provide detailed documentation. Until more information is made available, we cannot pursue the matter further,” he explained.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.

The party further alleged that the move is aimed at distracting attention from governance challenges in the state.
