PDP Slams Niger Govt Over ₦70bn Bond Approval
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Niger State has strongly criticized the state government following the approval of a ₦70 billion bond by the Niger State House of Assembly for infrastructure financing.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The party described the move as fiscally irresponsible and lacking consideration for the socio-economic challenges faced by citizens.
Speaking on behalf of the party, State Vice Chairman and Zonal Chairman for Niger North, Yahaya Abdullahi Ability, condemned the decision as a reflection of the government’s disregard for public welfare.
Ability highlighted the state’s ongoing struggles with budget performance and rising debt levels, questioning the rationale for further borrowing in the absence of visible developmental achievements.
The bond, which was approved by the state legislature at the request of Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, is part of a proposed ₦100 billion NCNI Private Bond Issuance over a 10-year period.
Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Finance, Aliyu Sheshi Wushishi (representing Wushishi Constituency), assured lawmakers that the request followed a comprehensive review and stakeholder engagement process.
Despite this, Ability challenged the necessity of the borrowing, insisting that the state’s infrastructure challenges demand efficient use of existing funds rather than incurring more debt.
He urged Governor Bago to embrace transparency, accountability, and prioritize governance that meets the real needs of the people.
