on

The Nigerian government reportedly allocated ₦19.43 billion for the upkeep and operation of the Presidential Air Fleet between July 2023 and September 2024. According to data from GovSpend, a platform tracking government expenditures, ₦13.55 billion of this amount was spent in 2024, representing about 66% of the fleet’s allocated budget.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

A significant portion of these costs was attributed to “Forex Transit Funds,” which cover expenses such as fuel and maintenance for aircraft operating abroad. Payments in foreign currencies, particularly U.S. dollars, ensure smooth operations for the fleet when stationed outside Nigeria.

Records show that in July 2023, ₦1.52 billion was allocated to cover foreign currency needs, with payments continuing through the year, including a notable ₦5.6 billion spread over six transactions in August 2024. A major chunk of the budget also went toward supporting President Bola Tinubu’s overseas trips, including a ₦5.08 billion allocation during his tour to the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia in April.

In response to aging aircraft, the Presidential Air Fleet added a new Airbus A330, valued at $100 million, replacing the Boeing 737 that had become costly to maintain. Tinubu’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, emphasized that the new acquisition was aimed at national safety, not personal luxury, and was essential to ensure reliable, cost-effective air travel for the President.

The fleet now includes around 11 aircraft, one of the largest in Africa, alongside the Gulfstream G550, Falcon 7Xs, and a Challenger 605. However, reports indicate that three of the fleet’s fixed-wing planes are currently out of service.
