Minimum Wage Negotiations: FG Aims For N62,000, Governors Push For N57,000

Negotiations between Organized Labor and the government continue, with offers and counter-offers being exchanged. Despite the Federal Government and private sector proposing a N60,000 monthly minimum wage, labor unions remain dissatisfied, having shifted from their initial demand of N497,000 to N494,000.
The recent deadlock in negotiations led to a nationwide strike by labor unions, disrupting economic activities. However, after a six-hour meeting with labor leaders, the Federal Government expressed commitment to raising the minimum wage above N60,000.
The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has raised concerns about the sustainability of a N60,000 minimum wage, warning that it could cripple state finances, leaving little for development projects. Despite acknowledging the need for a new minimum wage, the NGF urges all parties to ensure any agreement is realistic and sustainable.
Meanwhile, the Tripartite Committee on the minimum wage, chaired by Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, claims to be close to reaching a consensus. However, labor unions have criticized the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, for labeling the strike as “treasonable felony and economic sabotage,” asserting that such remarks divert attention from real economic issues.
As negotiations continue, the focus remains on striking a balance between addressing workers’ needs and ensuring the economic viability of states and the private sector.

In a voice note that went viral, Peller said the traditional classroom routine didn’t fit his lifestyle, especially compared to the earnings he makes from content creation. He added that long lectures, note-taking, and being surrounded by older classmates left him mentally exhausted.

Buba Galadima, Secretary of the NNPP Board of Trustees, told Arise News that aligning with former governor Abdullahi Ganduje, a longtime rival of NNPP leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, undermined the very movement that brought Yusuf to power.
Galadima said, “This defection is about his personal interest, not Kano’s. If he had moved to any party other than APC, we could have understood it. But this is purely survival.”
Recalling the effort behind Yusuf’s gubernatorial victory, Galadima added, “Kwankwaso and I worked day and night for him to win. Seeing him raise hands with Ganduje is bitter—he abandoned the principles that sustained him.”
He insisted Yusuf had already lost grassroots support in Kano and claimed, “If there were a free election today, he wouldn’t get five per cent of the votes.”
Despite the setback, Galadima vowed that the NNPP would survive, asserting, “What stopped God from performing a miracle before cannot stop Him again.”
