Reacting to the development, the media officer of the Super Eagles, Babafemi Raji, noted that Nigeria’s impressive presence has helped draw global attention to the continental showpiece, following the momentum generated from the team’s run at the last AFCON hosted in Côte d’Ivoire.
Football statistics platform WhoScored ranked Atalanta winger Ademola Lookman as the standout player of the tournament so far, awarding him a remarkable rating of 8.81. Lookman has been central to Nigeria’s unbeaten run, contributing three goals and four assists in just three matches, as the Super Eagles have scored 12 goals while conceding only four.
Egypt captain Mohamed Salah followed closely in second place with a rating of 8.23, while Senegal star Sadio Mané ranked third on 7.82. Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen also made the list, placing fourth with a rating of 7.61 after delivering a series of influential performances.
Further strengthening Nigeria’s dominance, Akor Adams and Wilfred Ndidi jointly occupied fifth place with ratings of 7.59 each. The rest of the top ten included Ivory Coast’s Yan Diomande in seventh place, Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez in eighth, Ivory Coast’s Amad Diallo in ninth, and Morocco’s Brahim Diaz, who completed the list with an identical rating.
As the AFCON quarter-final matches kick off this weekend, the Super Eagles will be banking on their top-rated players to sustain their fine form when they face Algeria at the Marrakech Stadium on Saturday in a bid to secure a semi-final spot.
