Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, officially joined the ADC during a well-attended ceremony in Enugu, where he urged Nigerians and opposition figures to rally around a united political platform aimed at confronting poverty, deepening national unity, and safeguarding democracy. He explained that his decision to leave the Labour Party was driven by patriotism and a deep concern for the country’s future, calling on the Obidient Movement and opposition leaders nationwide to embrace a broad coalition under the ADC.
In a message shared on his verified X handle, Obi disclosed that several influential political figures were present at the event, including senators Enyinnaya Abaribe, Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye and Gilbert Nnaji, alongside respected public figures such as High Chief Ben Obi, Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, Professor Pat Utomi, Professor Osita Ogbu and ADC founder, Chief Ralph Nwosu.
Further findings indicate that the lawmakers expected to align with Obi include three senators and five members of the House of Representatives from Anambra State, all formerly elected on the platform of the Labour Party. The House members are Afamefuna Ogene, Oby Orogbu, Harris Okonkwo, Emeka Godwin and George Ozodinobi, though their defections are yet to be formally announced on the floor of the National Assembly.
Reacting to the unfolding developments, the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, described Obi’s entry into the party as a major boost ahead of the 2027 general elections. He disclosed that discussions were ongoing with more lawmakers and political heavyweights, expressing confidence that additional high-profile defections would be announced in the coming weeks.
