Dani Alves Faces Trial For Alleged Sexual Assault Published on February 5, 2024 Former FC Barcelona and Brazilian footballer, Dani Alves, has officially begun his trial on charges of sexually assaulting a woman in a nightclub. The 40-year-old has been in detention without bail since the alleged rape scandal surfaced in December 2022. While initially denying knowledge of the victim, Dani Alves later admitted to consensual intercourse but refuted any non-consensual behavior. The accuser contends that Alves coerced her into a bathroom in the VIP section of a Barcelona nightclub. Following formal charges in August, a judge ruled there was enough evidence to proceed with the trial. In Spain, sexual assault cases encompass a broad range of offenses, and those found guilty face prison terms varying from four to fifteen years. If convicted, Dani Alves could potentially serve a 12-year sentence, with the public prosecutor seeking nine years in prison and €150,000 in damages for the victim. Regarded as one of football’s greatest wingbacks, Dani Alves played a significant role in top European clubs such as PSG and FC Barcelona. His trial is set to conclude on Wednesday, February 7.
