The players received by the governor were Miracle Ofem of the state-owned Abia Angels Football Club, Esther Okoronkwo of AFC Toronto in Canada, and Christy Ucheibe of FC Benfica, Portugal, who was represented at the event by her father.
While welcoming the players, Governor Otti expressed appreciation for their outstanding performance, describing them as worthy ambassadors who brought pride to Abia State and Nigeria at large. He noted that Abia has a long-standing reputation for producing champions and achievers across different fields.
The governor explained that earlier plans to host the players were unsuccessful due to their tight schedules and the need for them to quickly return to their respective clubs after the tournament.
Otti stated that his administration places great value on celebrating excellence, adding that honouring those who succeed serves as motivation for others to strive for greatness. He assured the Super Falcons players that the state would continue to celebrate their achievements as long as they keep recording victories.
Speaking on behalf of the players, Miracle Ofem thanked the governor and the people of Abia State for their support and warm reception, noting that the encouragement from Nigerians played a significant role in boosting the team’s morale throughout the competition.
The Super Falcons had staged a remarkable comeback in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, overturning a 2-0 deficit to defeat tournament hosts Morocco 3-2 and clinch the continental title.
