The intercepted drugs—compressed into coconut-sized parcels and wrapped in yellow cellophane—were concealed within the false bottom of a Mercedes Benz articulated truck bearing registration number EPE 959 YK (Lagos).
While addressing journalists at the NCS Command Headquarters in Century, Idiroko, Ipokia Local Government Area, the Area Comptroller, Godwin Otunla, revealed that the intercepted consignment weighed 1,450kg and had a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦172,920,000.
Otunla said the seizure was made at the Ilaro axis in Yewa South Local Government Area while the truck was in transit to an undisclosed destination. He also confirmed the arrest of 39-year-old truck driver, Williams Asare, in connection with the shipment.
He noted that the successful interception on Sunday, June 29, 2025, was the result of coordinated intelligence tracking by the Customs team, which monitored the truck from its loading point up to Ilaro.
Commending his officers for their dedication and vigilance, Otunla stressed the devastating impact such a large volume of illicit drugs could have had on Nigerian youth and public health. He then formally handed over the seized items to Olaniyi Ekudayo, the Narcotics Commander in charge of NDLEA’s Idiroko Special Area Command, in a show of inter-agency cooperation.
In response, Ekudayo praised the Customs operatives for their professionalism and commitment to national security. He stated that NDLEA would conduct forensic analysis and further investigations before prosecuting the suspect in court.
Ekudayo emphasized that the bust reflected the growing synergy between the NDLEA, NCS, and other security agencies working together to curb drug trafficking in Nigeria.
