Melaye made the remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday.

The former senator representing Kogi West also expressed deep regret over his role in supporting the APC’s rise to power, lamenting the severe state of the economy under the current administration.

“Atiku has yet to announce any plans to contest the 2027 elections,” Melaye noted, “but what he’s doing is even more important—he’s assembling men of honour and courage to help rescue this country from the disastrous grip of the APC. The damage they’ve caused is a satanic manifestation.”

He added:

“I regret ever supporting the APC. Through the Lord’s Prayer, I seek forgiveness. Anyone who has walked with unholy elements must come to regret it.”

“The crisis we’re facing is both seen and felt—it’s obvious to the blind and audible to the deaf. Nigeria has never been in a worse state. Like many others, I totally regret supporting the APC. Once I was blind, now I can see.”

Speaking in an interview on Channels Television, Olayinka described those leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to align with the ADC coalition as “bad eggs.”

“Let the bad eggs go,” he said. “One of them, from Kogi State, was the PDP governorship candidate, and on the day of the election, he stayed at home creating social media content.”

“He didn’t even come out to vote for himself. That’s the same person now talking about leading a coalition. I’m referring to Dino Melaye.”

Reports indicate that nearly all lawmakers voted in favour during Wednesday’s plenary session, with no opposition and only three abstentions. The bill now awaits presidential approval to become law.

According to Naija News, the proposed law also targets the “promotion” or “financing” of homosexuality, aiming to crack down on organisations supporting sexual and gender minorities. Fines for the offence have been raised to a maximum of 10 million CFA francs ($17,609), though it remains classified as a misdemeanour rather than a crime. Lawmakers argued that the previous 1966 legislation was too lenient.

The bill categorises homosexuality alongside necrophilia and bestiality under “acts against nature” offences but also criminalises false accusations of homosexual acts without proof.

Currently, over 30 of Africa’s 54 countries criminalise same-sex sexual acts. Senegal now joins nations such as Kenya, Sierra Leone, and Tanzania, where penalties can reach 10 or more years in prison. In Somalia, Uganda, and Mauritania, the offence can carry the death penalty.

Religious groups promoting Islamic values have supported the measure, organising rallies in recent weeks. Police have reportedly arrested at least a dozen individuals suspected of homosexual activity.

The bill fulfils a campaign promise made by Sonko while in opposition and represents a major shift in Senegal’s approach to homosexuality, reflecting conservative social attitudes in the predominantly Muslim nation.
