IPOB Rejects Renaming of Biafra Heroes Day, Maintains May 30 Sit-at-Home
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has strongly rejected attempts to rename Biafra Heroes Day as “Igbo Day,” calling it an affront to the memory of those who died during the Nigerian Civil War.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement issued Sunday, IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, announced that the group will observe May 30, 2025, with a traditional sit-at-home across Biafran territories and in the diaspora, honoring those who lost their lives in the 1967–1970 conflict. Activities will include prayers, lectures, and candlelight vigils.
“Biafra is larger than any single ethnic group,” the group stated, emphasizing that the war dead came from various ethnicities including Annang, Efik, Ibibio, Oron, Ijaw, and Igbo. IPOB denounced the proposed renaming as a “historical distortion” and a politically motivated insult.
The group stressed that “Biafra” is a historical identity that predates colonial Nigeria and should not be tampered with. “It is a sacred trust etched in the blood of over three million souls,” the statement read.
IPOB likened the remembrance to Europe’s VE Day and warned against politicizing the event. It described attempts to rename the day as sycophantic and vowed not to entertain further arguments on the issue.
“In the end, history remembers the steadfast, not the sycophant,” IPOB concluded.
