CHRICED Condemns Demolition Call by Senator Nwebonyi, Urges Protection of Abuja’s Indigenous
The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has criticized Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi for proposing the demolition of indigenous settlements near Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. CHRICED labeled the suggestion as a threat to marginalized populations and a violation of both national and international human rights laws.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Senator Nwebonyi argued that the settlements are “eyesores” damaging Nigeria’s international image and should be cleared. However, CHRICED rejected this reasoning, pointing out that these communities are ancestral lands inhabited by Abuja’s Original Inhabitants—low-income residents already affected by economic hardship.
Although the Senate ultimately rejected the motion, CHRICED expressed concern that the danger of displacement remains, especially following Senator Adamu Aliero’s remarks that the land in question had already been designated for development.
CHRICED emphasized that forced evictions would breach Section 43 of the Nigerian Constitution and international commitments like the UN Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, which protects the right to adequate housing.
The organization called for a halt to all demolition efforts and urged the Senate to pass a binding resolution preventing future evictions without due process, fair compensation, and proper resettlement.
They appealed to the international community, including the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, to intervene and help safeguard Abuja’s native communities.
